I have a vivid memory of getting stuck in GBT as a kid. And Nintendo Power stopped covering the game after the second time. It took me forever to figure out how to use the Ice Arrows to proceed, and that's why I think of the dungeon fondly.

You said it was unintuitive, but it's actually the complete opposite. It's so intuitive that you wouldn't expect it to actually work in a video game (well, at least back then. This was before physics and environmental manipulation puzzles were common). I was so used to Zelda games having puzzles made of simply "Hit this switch", "Light this on fire", "Do this specific thing" that I didn't think that ice could be used like that and I was genuinely impressed when I figured it out.

Aside from the weapon durability stuff, the complaint about repeating cutscenes is really dumb since you can skip all of them.

You can drop them on the ground just by pressing R.

Doesn't that throw them?

You have to hold the button to throw them. I aim for the ground and lightly toss them aside. I do this a lot in battles so I can pick up enemy's dropped weapons, throw them in their face to break them, then get mine again. Just make sure that they don't go for yours (well, personally I'm always carrying a Korok Leaf with me and use that as my temporary drop. They can take that if they want.)

I don't really find the weapon breaking bothersome, just for the reason every monster in sight sees fit to drop *some* kind of weapon. I derive enjoyment from running into a bind and having to beat something to death with a mop

My only real issue with it are the elemental weapons. You can't really play around with those. They seem like they should be treated as special, but, you have to manage inventory space and they fall behind in terms of damage. I just end up breaking them on random Lizalfos here and move on. Pity.

For the weaker ones I just use them once to activate their effect and switch. For example I'll shock an enemy to dropped their equipment, and while they're stunned I'll change to my strong but slower two-handed weapon and smash them to pieces (literally, if I've frozen them).

Ugh... I had to complete Eventide Island twice because I put one of the orbs in the wrong place. If there was some way to get back up the mountain with it, there wouldn't have been a problem, but I couldn't find any.

At least the second time I was able to speed through it in a few minutes since I knew where everything was. Compared to all my random wandering about the first time.

I think people blow weapon breaking wayyyy out of proportion. Most of the regular weapons don't break easily, only the monster drops and rusty ones do. You're meant to use those as temporary weapons in fights rather than carrying them around as your primary weapons. I tend to pick them up just to throw at enemies; it does a ton of damage and it destroys the weapon meaning they can't use it. The only other time I've had trouble with weapons breaking was when I fought really strong enemies with not strong enough weapons. I quickly learned that maximizing my damage was far more important that wailing on them with a ton of hits (even if I could still win either way), so now I always save my strongest weapons for them and eat strength boosting food to get the most out of each hit.

It's easy for weapon breaking to be annoying if you make mistakes in how you handle your weapons. That's what I thought when I started out. But when I learned more about how to use what I found more intelligently, it became really fun because I had to put more thought into how I attacked enemies.

I guess I'm not sure what you mean by "inventory management" then. I felt constricted by the limited inventory slots at first (8 melee weapon doesn't seem like enough), but those can be expanded quite a bit... I think to 30 or something. Of course, that would require an incredible level of exploration to find the required upgrade materials, but that's what the game's all about.

I guess this isn't the topic for it but it blows my mind that you can't drop weapons from the quick menu.

You can drop them on the ground just by pressing R.

God I had an amazingly unproductive day today. Took a wrong turn out of Kakariko village and headed northeast. I kept saying I'd turn back, but there was always something else just close by that kept me going further. I eventually made it to an island in the east where I found a HINOX! It was huge! I decided to fight it, despite thinking I'd die immediately, but I manged to kill it without taking a single hit.

Unfortunately my success led me to take on a Lionel I found farther away, and that didn't go as well. Chopped me dead in one hit. I tried to sneak around him, and the f***er acted like he didn't see me, fired an arrow straight up into the air, and it landed directly on top of me 30 feet away killing me instantly. On my next attempt I quaffed a sneaking potion and slowly Metal Gear Solid'd my way around him, eventually making my way to two chests with about half a thousand rupees in them. Not bad.

Bump.

I want to hear more people's opinions on gyro vs. stick aiming. To me that's one of the biggest things that interests me about this. I've never been able to use stick controls with precision, so while I can understand how people would have trouble aiming with gyro controls, it really baffles me that so many people not only don't like them, but prefer stick controls in comparison, when I picked up motion controls so much more easily.

Diving into bales of hay and waiting 2 minutes isn't fun.

The thing that I appreciate, is that AC didn't award you much for exploring. You got feathers or flags or something, but they never felt like they did anything unless you wanted to be a completionist and get them all(And even then, that didn't feel rewarding). BotW is two fold on the rewards, you are constantly in need for your own survival(You can run from everything, which is its own style of play and not always easy, so its still engaging to play this way) and most of the things you find give you some form of character progression(Hearts, inventory space, stamina). They are tangible rewards for actually participating in gameplay. This is something many open world games don't provide(Or, they think their often half-hearted side storylines are fulfilling, when often they aren't).

Yeah. One thing that I thought about is that Zelda games don't reward you that much for exploring the world. The best thing you get usually are pieces of heart and worthless rupees. In BotW however everythingyou find has value, and I really appreciate that.

Also, one important thing I forgot to mention is how the games I listed use gyro controls and using the right stick to swing the camera, which I feel is really important. In games where you only use the right stick, you have to use it to move your aim left and right to track targets and see around you quickly, but also move it around to aim at specific points and get headshots or target other areas you need. I find this ridiculously difficult. Trying to move the stick in a way so that you can do both well is really hard, and finding the sensitivity that will let you swing the camera around fast enough, but also let you have precision aiming when you need to focus on a specific area is a nightmare. I don't know how anyone manages to do it well. Mixing gyro controls with using the right stick to swing the camera is so much easier.

swordz9 posted...
I never use any kind of motion or gyro stuff unless forced to. Aiming is good enough with analogs that we don't really need to move controllers around or anything.

And I would really like to know what you think about the above. It seems so much easier for me when the controls for moving the camera left and right and aiming are separate.

Regaro posted...
To actually answer your questions, my only experience with them are the 3DS Zelda remakes. But they're f***ing obnoxious and near impossible to use there, and I can't visualize them being more comfortable than traditional controls in any situation.

Well, like I said I always found trying to aim while moving around the screen you're looking at to be uncomfortable. I think it's a much different experience aiming with the Switch controller while looking at a TV.

Worst thing ever. Can't stand it.

Could you elaborate? And answer the questions? I know a lot of people don't like them, and I want to know why.

It feels like such a knee jerk reaction with most people. The moment motion controls are mentioned they start frothing about gimmicks and stuff. So I really want to know what people think about aiming with the Switch controller. I find it really hard to see how people can prefer stick aiming to that.

It's been made painfully clear in the past years that a lot of people hate gyro/motion controls being used to aim, specifically with Nintendo games. Everybody complains when Zelda does it, people wanted stick-aiming for Splatoon, and ravaged Star Fox Zero for having it. I always found this kind of weird, since I've never minded gyro controls, so I didn't get why people hated it so much, particularly compared to stick-aiming, which I think is far more inaccurate (yet people seem to prefer, at least outside of using a mouse). That said, I did find them somewhat uncomfortable in different ways:

- Note that I'm not referring to the Wii's motion controls, since that used sensors, but I might as well include it since people lump it together. I did find them difficult to use, mostly because trying to line the controller to the sensor just right took too much effort to be used as seamless aiming. I also didn't like having to hold the controller up to face it, and of course if something blocked it for a second your aim would be thrown off.

- The Wii U's gyro controls were better, notably when it came to Splatoon, although I did find the controller too heavy to hold up for extended periods of time. And while I like games that used the two screens well, trying to look at it and aim at the same time wasn't great because you'd have to hold it just right to do both well, which again wasn't helped by the weight of the controller.

- 3DS aiming is sort of the same thing. Since you're always looking at the controller, you have to hold it a certain way to aim well and see what you're doing. I usually look down at my portables, so it always meant adjusting.

However something changed recently with the Switch. The Switch controller uses gyro controls, but it's lighter and doesn't have a screen, and I think it's PERFECT. Aiming the bow and arrow in Breath of the Wild is ridiculously easy and responsive. When it comes to getting precise aiming and aiming well while moving and dodging enemy attacks it never lets me down. I also played some of the Splatoon 2 demo with the Pro Controller, and again, it's perfect for aiming in intense firefights. I have so much better control over my aiming than I ever did in games using the right stick. I feel like gyro controls are the perfect way to aim shots on consoles, which is a shame because I doubt the Switch will get many shooters, especially compared to Playstation/Xbox

Because of this, I didn't just want to get people's opinion about them in general, I wanted to know what their answer was specifically about these two questions:

1) Have you played using gyro controls using the Switch controller*/Pro controller? (*specifically the controller with handles, not Joy-Cons separately, or attached to the screen. I actually haven't done this yet to compare.)

2) Do you believe that aiming with sticks is better for console games than gyro controls? If so, why?

I think a lot of people were burned by motion controls for some of the same reasons I listed above, but I feel the Switch controller solves them and makes them the best way to aim on consoles. But still I hear people complain about them in Breath of the Wild, so I dunno. It confuses me. I thi
